2026 Online Course Price Index: The Real Cost of 10 Major Platforms

19 min readFive Picked Editorial Team

A course subscription pays for a particular kind of access, for a particular period, under a particular certificate policy. Those details matter more than a large monthly headline. A free opening lesson, a paid library, a verified course certificate and an external certification exam are different purchases. Putting them in the same price column without explaining the differences produces an attractive comparison that cannot support a buying decision.

This index records ten platforms using official public pricing, product and help sources reviewed on October 31, 2026. It is an original aggregation of published observations, not an original experiment or a measure of teaching quality. The output is a dated comparison table and a downloadable dataset. It does not claim that the platforms supplied private data, that we bought every subscription, or that a listed certificate improves employment outcomes.

The useful question is not which logo has the smallest number. It is what a learner must pay to get the required material, finish the required work and receive the required evidence of completion. For the existing shortlist, start with our five-platform online course guide. The wider index below includes additional platforms without adding them to that ranked shortlist.

Methodology: what this price index measures

The sample preserves the five platforms actually present in our course category: Coursera, DataCamp, Skillshare, Scrimba and MasterClass. It adds Udemy, edX, LinkedIn Learning, Pluralsight and Codecademy. This is a purposive sample of different purchasing models, not a statistically representative market sample. It does not establish a market average, an enrollment ranking or the lowest price available anywhere. In particular, Scrimba is in the existing category; Udemy is an additional research subject.

Each row identifies the selected product before describing its price. An individual library subscription is not interchangeable with a business seat, an open-course verified track or a broader professional networking bundle. The table therefore retains the product name, observed currency, billing basis, free-access boundary, certificate conditions, annual-payment evidence and organizational offering. Links in the last column identify the official pages used for that observation.

Research used publicly readable official pages and, where a help page redirected to an unreadable loading screen, its official indexed text. That limitation is disclosed for Udemy. We did not create accounts, complete checkouts, redeem trials or test learning outcomes. Public pages can be localized and change between visits. The latest MasterClass observation rendered Swedish kronor; the DataCamp row uses its observed US-dollar rendering. Neither is converted into another currency.

A number advertised per month with annual billing is a monthly equivalent, not evidence of a monthly installment option. If a page states an annual total, we retain it. If it states only an annual-billing monthly equivalent, we label multiplication by twelve as a calculation. We do not treat that arithmetic as a captured invoice. Taxes, regional eligibility, promotions and the final order summary remain outside any universal all-in-price claim.

The five existing platforms’ free-access, limit, trial and certificate descriptions are reproduced from the same reviewed records as our guide to free course access and certificate restrictions. This prevents the index from silently expanding a free plan. Additional certificate products are recorded separately. Missing amounts mean that the necessary evidence was not established; they do not mean that the product or certificate costs nothing.

For a matched monthly and annual offer, annual saving is calculated as (1 − annual amount / (12 × monthly amount)) × 100. The alternative metric, the premium for twelve monthly payments over annual payment, is ((12 × monthly amount / annual amount) − 1) × 100. These percentages have different denominators. Neither measures a historical price increase, an automatic-renewal increase or an undisclosed fee.

Only four individual offers have a usable matched pair in this snapshot. Calculations use the published nominal amounts without currency conversion and round only the final percentage. Codecademy’s annual amount is derived from its annual-billing monthly equivalent, so that distinction remains visible. Promotional comparisons without a matching monthly price are not admitted. No overall cross-platform price winner is calculated because the products, currencies and entitlements differ.

The ten-platform price and certificate table

Read the entire row before comparing amounts. “Included” refers to the certificate type and eligible catalog described in that row; it is not a guarantee of academic credit, external exam admission or admission to every course. The free-access column is deliberately separate from the certificate column. Blank numeric fields in the download are missing observations, not zero-price offers.

Download the October 31, 2026 course price and certificate dataset (CSV). The file contains the same ten observations, source URLs, qualifications and review date as this table. Derived annual equivalents are labeled in the price text. It is a single snapshot, not a historical time series.

Coursera — Coursera PlusUSDUS$59/month or US$399/year. Annual monthly equivalent: US$33.25 (399 / 12).Free preview replaces the old audit experience for most courses: the first module is available, including assessments when provided in that module. Selected Community Impact courses are free. This is not unrestricted free access to every course. Preview does not unlock the remaining course modules. Do not claim all graded work is locked: Coursera explicitly includes assessments when available within the preview module. Coursera Plus monthly advertises a 7-day trial. Expired US$35 promotion ending September 23, 2026 is excluded. Plus is not every Coursera program; check the included badge before subscribing.

DataCamp — Premium, observed special priceUSDUS$14/month equivalent, billed annually; US$168 annual equivalent calculated as 14 × 12.The ongoing Basic plan is free and the pricing comparison includes the first chapter of every course. It is a sample of the course library, not full free completion of every course. Full courses and career or skill tracks are not included in Basic. Practice exercises and step-by-step projects are limited; no unstated numerical allowance is promised. No universal fixed-day Premium trial is verified on the reviewed pricing page. Basic is a limited free plan, not a countdown trial. The pricing comparison excludes certificates from Basic and includes them with Premium and Teams. Do not treat free chapter access as a free certificate route.Annual special price observed; no matching monthly invoice established, so no annual-saving percentage.Teams: US$14/user/month equivalent, billed annually, for 2 or more. DataCamp USD billing and currency conversion policy

Pricing localized across retrievals; this row retains the observed USD rendering. A promotional label is not a permanent renewal-price promise. Certificate eligibility follows the detailed comparison table, which excludes Basic.

Skillshare — Individual annual membershipUSDUS$167.88/year, advertised as US$13.99/month equivalent; annual payment follows the trial. The reviewed subscription offer provides a trial, not a verified ongoing free full-library membership. The trial provides class access for its stated period; it does not create permanent access after cancellation. The annual pricing page says the year is billed in full after the trial. Skillshare documents a standard 7-day trial and sometimes longer promotional trials. Payment details are required; the subscription begins charging unless cancelled before the displayed trial end.Members earn a class certificate after watching all lessons and submitting the class project. The source does not state a separate per-certificate fee; this guide does not promise trial-only certificate eligibility or permanent free certificate access. No comparable month-to-month invoice verified; the monthly label alone does not establish a discount.Teams: US$159/user/year, annual contract; no monthly Teams option.Skillshare annual payment and Teams information

Individual and organizational products are separate. The lower displayed Teams seat rate does not make an individual membership a corporate license.

Scrimba — ProUSDOfficial 2026 article lists US$49/month or US$294/year (US$24.50/month equivalent).Freemium includes free introductory courses and introductory scrims from Pro courses. The free selection is ongoing but does not unlock the premium catalog. The help center limits free accounts to 10 interactive challenges in total and excludes private Pro Discord channels. Premium courses and unlimited challenges require Pro. No fixed-day Pro trial is verified here. The free plan and a paid-plan refund guarantee are different offers.Scrimba’s pricing FAQ says certificate access is paused when an account downgrades to Free until it resubscribes. Price comes from the dated official article; local checkout and regional discounts can differ. Certificate access follows the pricing FAQ used by the existing free guide; the article’s broader certificate wording is not used to override that rule.

MasterClass — Entry membership, observed SEK offerSEKStarting at SEK 129/month equivalent, billed annually; SEK 1,548 annual equivalent calculated as 129 × 12.No ongoing free full-library membership is verified. Eligible recipients can redeem a Guest Pass sent by an existing member. Guest Pass access is time-limited and depends on receiving and redeeming an eligible invitation. A refund guarantee does not provide a no-payment enrollment route. A Guest Pass provides 14 days of access and requires payment details. It converts to a paid subscription unless cancelled. The separate 30-day satisfaction guarantee starts with an eligible purchase; it is not free access. The regular class help page says those classes do not provide an official completion certificate. MasterClass Certificates is a separate product; this page does not present it as a free certificate included in a Guest Pass.Annual billing is advertised; no matching monthly payment option or savings percentage verified.MasterClass at Work: organizational offering; no public numeric amount verified.Observed SEK starting rate with annual billing

edX — Open-course audit or verified trackUSDAudit: US$0 where offered. Verified track: course-specific fee; official overview describes prices starting around US$50, not a universal invoice.Audit is free where available, with time-limited access and no graded assignments or certificate; some offerings, including professional education, do not offer audit. The verified track charges a course-specific fee for the eligible certificate route. An approximate verified starting price is not a monthly charge or a guarantee for a particular course. Business Essentials and Teams have different catalog scope.

LinkedIn Learning — Access through Premium CareerUSDPremium Career starts at US$39.99/month/license or US$239.88/year/license; annual equivalent US$19.99/month. Learning is included in that bundle. An eligible Premium trial is temporary access, not an ongoing free full-library tier. This is a Premium bundle observation, not a claimed standalone Learning subscription. Published prices are estimates and may differ by location, taxes, device or offer.

Pluralsight — AI+, public display with unresolved pricing contextUSDPublic page displays US$29/month for AI+, but stale promotion terms prevent confirmation as a current checkout quote; excluded from numeric comparisons.A 10-day individual trial is advertised. Lab and sandbox trial descriptions differ within the page; full paid-feature access is not promised here.Official business documentation lists course completion certificates. ITIL and PRINCE2 exam vouchers are documented as add-ons; a universal exam fee or blanket voucher inclusion is not verified.Annual billing labels in the readable page conflict; no annual amount or savings percentage accepted.Business plans exist; conflicting annual/monthly labels prevent a reliable numeric team quote. Request confirmation.Displayed AI+ rate, trial and conflicting annual labels

ITIL and PRINCE2 exam voucher add-ons

The page retains promotion terms ending July 6, 2026 and ambiguous yearly units. Displayed text is evidence of a source limitation, not a verified current payable price. This row is intentionally incomplete.

Codecademy — PlusUSDPlus: US$29.99/month or US$14.99/month equivalent billed annually; US$179.88 annual equivalent calculated as 14.99 × 12.Basic is free with limited course access. The pricing comparison excludes completion certificates and skill or career paths from Basic.Plus and Pro include completion certificates. The derived annual total is arithmetic from the advertised monthly equivalent, not a separately observed checkout invoice. Plus and Pro are different entitlements.

What the matched billing comparisons actually show

The small table below isolates a reproducible billing-choice calculation. It answers what twelve monthly payments would cost relative to the observed annual route for the same named product. It assumes the displayed nominal rates remain unchanged over that hypothetical period. It does not predict the price of a future renewal or assert that a learner needs a full year.

Four matched individual billing choices; no historical price-change claim
ProductTwelve monthly payments (calculated)Annual amount / basisAnnual savingMonthly-payment premium
Coursera — Coursera PlusUS$708.00US$399.00; published annual total43.64%77.44%
Scrimba — ProUS$588.00US$294.00; published annual total50.00%100.00%
LinkedIn Learning — Access through Premium CareerUS$479.88US$239.88; published annual total50.01%100.05%
Codecademy — PlusUS$359.88US$179.88; derived from annual-billing monthly equivalent50.02%100.07%

Codecademy Plus has the largest calculated monthly-payment premium in this four-offer subset: 100.07%. That result is a denominator-based billing comparison, not a hidden surcharge. Its small difference from LinkedIn’s result reflects the displayed price precision and should not be interpreted as a meaningful market advantage. The largest observed billing percentage does not identify the largest historical increase; no comparable historical series was collected.

Nor does an annual discount establish that annual payment is the sensible purchase. A learner who needs only a limited period of access may spend less by paying monthly and stopping. Conversely, someone who repeatedly renews monthly can spend more over a full year. The decision requires a personal study plan; this index supplies the billing inputs without inventing a completion time, a success rate or a guaranteed return on education spending.

Three major online-learning cost traps in 2026

1. Confusing a monthly equivalent with the amount due

The first trap is a unit error. A headline expressed per month can describe an annual commitment. Skillshare’s individual offer explicitly pairs its monthly equivalent with a full annual payment after the trial. MasterClass’s observed entry label also says annual billing. Those labels are useful for comparison, but they cannot by themselves support a small monthly cash-flow budget.

The practical check is to write down the payment event separately from the advertised rate: what is charged, when it is charged and what period that payment covers. A trial can move that event into the future without changing the size of the eventual commitment. A cancellation instruction should be read alongside that payment event. Ending renewal and receiving a refund are different questions; this index does not assume that one guarantees the other.

An annual plan also creates a utilization decision. Paying less per advertised month may still be a poor match for a learner who has not selected a course. Before choosing the billing cycle, identify the actual required content and the account that needs access. This is a budgeting framework, not a claim that annual contracts are inherently unfair or that a particular provider hides its terms.

2. Treating free access as a free credential

The second trap is buying the wrong outcome. An audit route can support reading or watching without providing graded work or a verified certificate. A preview can help assess the teaching format without unlocking the remainder. A free coding tier can support introductory practice while excluding completion certificates. These are different access boundaries, so the word “free” needs a noun after it: free preview, free chapter, free course or free certificate.

edX makes the distinction concrete: its audit route and verified track have different entitlements, and the verified fee depends on the course. MasterClass illustrates another boundary: its regular class completion policy does not turn the separate Certificates product into a membership inclusion. For the two existing academic and data-learning options, our Coursera and DataCamp decision framework provides the narrower purchasing context.

A completion document also needs to be distinguished from an external professional examination. Pluralsight documents specific exam-voucher add-ons; that evidence does not authorize a claim that every certification exam is included in a library subscription. Similarly, a platform’s course certificate is not automatically a professional license. The responsible budget asks which issuer, assessment and document are actually required, then checks the relevant product page.

No universal certificate surcharge can be calculated from these observations. Some certificates are included in eligible paid access, some require a different track and some belong to a separate product whose amount was not established. Calling the unknown amount zero would mislead the reader. Calling it the largest hidden fee would be equally unsupported. The table keeps those unknowns visible instead of converting different products into an invented percentage.

3. Comparing unlike subscriptions and overlooking the organization

The third trap is assuming that a platform sells a single interchangeable subscription. Udemy distinguishes Personal Plan from individual course purchases. LinkedIn’s current individual route places Learning inside Premium access. A business administrator may need an organizational agreement rather than a collection of personal logins. The correct comparison starts with the product and intended use, then considers the price.

Team rows therefore preserve the seat unit and billing period. A per-user annual rate is neither a flat company bill nor permission to share an account. Where a public business amount was unavailable or its units were contradictory, the table says so. It does not reconstruct a quote from another provider or use an old promotional number to make the comparison look complete.

Catalog scope matters here as well. edX’s business tiers have different content coverage, so their starting amounts cannot be interpreted as the price difference for identical access. Organizational pricing can also include administration rather than merely more lessons. A procurement comparison should identify the necessary catalog and administration requirements before multiplying seats. This study records the published offer; it does not invent a minimum deployment size where the source did not verify one.

The same caution applies to price movement. A higher-priced tier, an external examination and a renewal increase are distinct events. This dataset has no matched earlier observation from which to measure a market-wide increase. Its original contribution is the transparent aggregation and consistent classification, including source failures. A future edition could compare like-for-like observations, but this edition does not manufacture that history.

How to use the index before paying

Start with the required learning outcome and write the exact course or pathway name. Check whether the selected subscription covers it, whether assessments are available and what evidence is issued after completion. Then choose a billing horizon based on your own plan. Do not infer that an entire platform is covered because one included course appears in search results, or that a completion badge satisfies an employer’s external credential requirement.

Next, separate exploration from commitment. If a documented free preview or limited plan answers your initial question, use that boundary deliberately. If the required outcome crosses it, record the relevant paid route before enrolling. For creative learning, our analysis of Skillshare projects and MasterClass lessons adds context about the two formats without making a price label stand in for the learning decision.

Finally, save the selected official offer and order summary for your own records. Confirm the currency, payment interval, included catalog and certificate route together. A public snapshot is useful for discovering the questions to ask, while the actual purchase has its own terms. No affiliate links are used in this article; external references go directly to official platform sources.

Frequently asked questions

Does a free course include a free certificate?

Not necessarily. Preview, audit, chapter access and a completion certificate are separate entitlements. The table records each platform’s documented boundary; an unverified certificate fee is not treated as zero.

Which platform has the largest verified price increase?

A historical or renewal increase cannot be established from this single snapshot. Among four matched individual billing pairs, Codecademy Plus has a calculated 100.07% premium for twelve monthly payments versus annual billing. That is a billing-choice comparison, not a hidden fee or a historical increase.

Are annual monthly equivalents paid month by month?

Not unless the selected offer explicitly permits it. An amount advertised per month with annual billing is an equivalent rate. The table distinguishes observed annual totals from annual equivalents calculated by multiplying the displayed rate by twelve.

Why are some amounts missing?

Udemy’s public individual amount was not readable, and Pluralsight’s public page contained stale promotion terms and contradictory yearly labels. Other organizational products did not expose a numeric quote. Missing amounts remain unverified rather than being filled from third-party estimates.

Is the dataset a teaching-quality or employment-outcome study?

No. It aggregates official-source purchasing conditions reviewed October 31, 2026. No course-quality experiment, completion-time measurement or employment-outcome test was performed. A completion certificate is not automatically an external professional credential.

Conclusion: budget for the outcome, not the headline

A defensible course budget has three parts: the access you need, the period you are buying and the evidence you expect to receive. The least expensive visible label does not settle any of those questions. A limited free route can be sufficient for exploration; a paid subscription can include the needed completion certificate; a separate credential can require a different purchase. The distinction must be checked for the selected product.

This index makes that check reproducible through named plans, original currencies, source links, explicit gaps and a downloadable snapshot. It does not rank teaching quality or claim a universal hidden-fee winner. Use it to compare the actual billing and certificate boundaries, then return to the official offer before committing money. When the evidence is incomplete, an honest missing value is more useful than a confident invented price.
