VPNs with a free plan

Most “free VPNs” are not free in any useful sense: they cap your data, show ads, or log your activity. A few major VPNs still offer a genuine free tier, and one of them is the only free VPN we would recommend for everyday use. This page explains which VPN free plans are worth trying and what you give up compared to paying.

Our verdict

Proton VPN is the only free VPN in our top 5 we would recommend for daily use, because its free plan has no data cap. The others — NordVPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN and PIA — are paid-only, but their long-term prices are low enough that a cheap paid plan usually beats a sketchy free VPN.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free VPN with no data limit?
Proton VPN offers a free plan with no data cap, which is unusual. Most other free VPNs, including many you see advertised, limit you to a few hundred megabytes or a few hours per month.
Are free VPNs safe?
Some are, many are not. A free VPN from a known, audited provider such as Proton VPN is generally safe. Unknown free VPNs may log your traffic, inject ads or sell data. Stick to brands you recognise.
Is a cheap paid VPN better than a free one?
For most people, yes. Long-term plans from NordVPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN and PIA drop to around $2–3.50 per month, which is often worth paying to avoid the limits and risks of free VPNs.
