Free access & export limits

Free video and design software in 2026: what is actually free?

Free to download is not always free to deliver. Our five existing video and design picks include a desktop trial, watermarked editors, a limited recording plan and selected free stock assets. This guide separates those options and explains the official conditions before you spend time on a project.

What is actually free, limited or a trial?

A genuine free option can still have export and licensing restrictions. Riverside provides an ongoing limited free plan; Filmora and Camtasia provide watermarked editing access; Premiere desktop is a time-limited trial. Envato provides selected free assets, not a free video editor or a full-library trial.

The traps to avoid are assumptions: free download means free delivery, unlimited recording means unlimited separate tracks, or free stock means unrestricted commercial rights. None of those follows automatically. These are disclosed conditions, not accusations of deceptive conduct by the providers.

Official sources checked . Where the reviewed source does not state an exact limit or provide clear commercial permission, this guide does not invent one. Paid price labels on the cards are separate from free-access conditions.

Adobe Premiere Pro: Time-limited desktop trial

Free access and duration
The desktop app has a 7-day full-version trial, not an ongoing free desktop plan. Adobe also describes a separate free mobile app; that is not the desktop product compared here.
Export and usage limits
The trial starts at checkout and converts to a paid subscription unless cancelled. The reviewed trial page does not specify a trial export-resolution or project-count cap; this guide does not invent one.
Commercial-use position
No blanket commercial clearance is claimed for the trial. Adobe’s general terms prohibit commercial use of output from versions designated NFR, including versions designated trial or evaluation. Check the designation and terms supplied with your installation before paid work; asset rights remain separate.
Assumption to avoid
A free download is not a permanently free desktop license, and a full-featured trial is not proof of commercial permission.

Filmora: Limited free access with no stated trial expiry

Free access and duration
Wondershare describes the basic editing trial as having no expiration date. This is limited free access, not a promise of free watermark-free delivery.
Export and usage limits
Exported videos contain a Filmora watermark. Removing it requires a paid plan. The reviewed support page does not publish a numerical project, export-duration or resolution cap.
Commercial-use position
Wondershare says monetization requires a commercial license. Asset permission is separate: assets marked for commercial use differ from personal-use assets, and mixing commercial and non-commercial assets restricts the result to non-commercial use.
Assumption to avoid
Being able to edit indefinitely does not make the watermarked free version suitable for monetized client work.

Envato Elements: Selected free assets; no subscription trial

Free access and duration
Envato says its subscription has no free trial. A free account can download selected free files without paying for the full library. Envato is an asset library, not a video editor.
Export and usage limits
The free selection is not unlimited subscription access. Each free file is licensed for one customized end product; it cannot be redistributed as a standalone stock file.
Commercial-use position
The Free Files Use Policy explicitly permits a single commercial end product, including client work, subject to its restrictions. Music has additional limits, including no broadcast use or theatrical film release under this policy.
Assumption to avoid
A free account or a free stock download does not unlock the full paid library or remove the need to read the file’s license.

Riverside: Limited ongoing free plan; separate paid-plan trial

Free access and duration
Riverside has a free account with ongoing recording and editing access. A separate 14-day paid-plan trial requires a credit card and begins charging after the trial unless cancelled.
Export and usage limits
The free pricing comparison lists up to 720p video, a Riverside watermark, and an initial 2-hour allowance to try separate multi-track recordings. That allowance is not described as a fresh monthly allocation. The help center distinguishes it from unlimited recording, editing and exports of edits or clips.
Commercial-use position
This guide does not certify blanket commercial clearance for a Free account. Riverside’s terms apply to individuals and businesses and require appropriate rights in uploaded content; account access is not permission to use someone else’s footage, music or likeness.
Assumption to avoid
Unlimited recording does not mean unlimited separate high-quality track downloads or watermark-free delivery.

Camtasia: Free desktop editor with watermarked export

Free access and duration
TechSmith offers a free Camtasia Editor download with editing access. It is described as free mode rather than a fixed-day editor trial; no expiry period is promised here.
Export and usage limits
Produced videos include a watermark. The download terms prohibit removing, obscuring or altering that watermark, and reserve the right to terminate the limited version. No numerical project or export-resolution limit is asserted by this guide.
Commercial-use position
The reviewed free-download terms do not provide an explicit blanket commercial-use approval. This guide therefore does not label free Camtasia exports commercially cleared. Check the applicable EULA and the rights of any included media before a commercial delivery.
Assumption to avoid
Do not mistake a separate Camtasia Online offer for the desktop editor, or remove the free desktop version’s watermark.

Our verdict

Use the ongoing limited options to learn a workflow, but check the export and commercial-use conditions before client delivery. Premiere desktop has a short trial; Filmora and Camtasia add watermarks; Riverside limits free video quality and separate-track access; Envato’s free files have a specific single-end-product license. None is presented as unlimited, unrestricted free production.

Frequently asked questions

Are all five tools permanently free?
No. Premiere desktop has a 7-day trial. Filmora provides limited editing access without a stated trial expiry, Camtasia offers a watermarked free editor, Riverside has a limited ongoing Free account, and Envato offers selected free assets rather than a subscription trial.
Which free options add a watermark?
Filmora and Camtasia document watermarks on free exported videos. Riverside’s Free pricing comparison also lists a watermark. Editing access is not the same as watermark-free delivery.
Is Riverside’s 2-hour separate-track allowance renewed every month?
The free-account help describes the first 2 hours of recorded content as an opportunity to try separate high-quality tracks. This guide does not treat that allowance as a monthly reset or confuse it with ongoing recording and editing access.
Can I use Envato’s free files for a paying client?
The Free Files Use Policy permits one customized commercial end product per file, including client work, subject to restrictions. It does not permit standalone redistribution, and music has additional limits.
Does a free editor automatically allow monetized work?
No. Wondershare requires a commercial license for monetization, and asset permissions are separate. Adobe’s NFR terms restrict commercial output from designated versions. This guide does not certify blanket commercial permission for free Camtasia or Riverside access.
